Always facing a deadline for something else. So, every year he was looking for something else. One year he added financial services and got all those beautiful letters after his name such as CFP. BUT that brought along its own headaches. Who had enough time to keep up with the stock market and the tax industry at the same time? There was even more paperwork to keep track of and although the income increased, so did the expenses and the pain on the side of his neck (stress related of course).

Then one day, several years ago, it struck him like a bolt of lightning. At that single, electrifying moment of clarity he realized that if he was going to be at the top of his field, he had to find more customers (preferably higher paying), with less paperwork and make more time for himself to enjoy life with his family. Sure, you say! That’s easy…NOT!!

What it did take was courage to start “thinking outside the box” and to start working “on” his business and not “in” it. He realized that there are a lot of accountants who can do taxes and bookkeeping but maybe less than 1% of them who have any clue how to “market” and to “sell”. See, in college they don’t teach you how to get new clients but rather how to fill out a 1040 form. Big deal!

So his next step was to learn everything and anything he could find about marketing. He came to realize that the “usual” tax marketing didn’t work so he went about “borrowing” from other industries and adapting them to his business. In 5 years time, he has grown his nice little practice from doing 250 returns to over 10,000 returns this past year. He is in the top 1% of all tax practices in the country. Perhaps the top 1/10th of 1%! Currently, he works when he wants. He doesn’t live with that stress in his neck every day anymore. There is money to pay all the bills and allow him to spend a large part of his year traveling and riding his bicycle. Think “Tour De France.” Many beautiful days riding on quiet roads. It’s his love and his passion. What’s yours?

She has always had the drive to be an entrepreneur. After 20 years of working in the restaurant industry doing everything from busing tables to being the first woman supervisor for the Pillsbury Corporation, she decided to switch fields and became an independent contractor for a mortgage broker. She found the house of her dreams and earned enough money so that after 8 years she “retired” to live on a 30 acres farm in rural Virginia. BUT…two months later, after being bored to death she needed “more” and went to work for a family owned tax firm.

The next season the owner’s son called and asked her to teach the tax school they had just purchased and manage the office. That February her boss (whom she had never met) showed up at her office at 11:00 pm one night and asked who she really was? You see out of his 9 offices doing almost 7000 returns in 1994 her office had the lowest labor cost, highest dollar per return cost, and the highest profit margins than any other office and he wanted to know “her secret.” She explained to him that customer service and the relationships you have with your clients and employees is the same in a tax office or a restaurant and with her other financial business. Relationships and good customer service create profitability. It is very simple to say but difficult for many to implement. He was convinced! She was put in charge of 5 offices and the next year the entire company. She did the hiring, training, operations, and system development. During the next 10 years the company grew from 9 offices doing almost 8,000 returns with a gross income just less than 1 million to doing 24,487 returns in 3 states with 24 offices and over 4.5 million in gross sales.

Finally, it was time and she “retired” again. This time she opened up her own office in a very, very small rural area. Logically, it made no sense. Every statistic said that this area was too small for a tax office. The entire county only has 7,000 residents. That was 3 years ago and she now has 2 offices doing over 1000 returns.
